GATE over.... What now?

So, you have appeared for GATE.. your first most important exam in engineering. If you are a CAT person, this post is probably not for you. This is mainly for the freshers graduating this year or others who have solely prepared a year for GATE. By this time, you must have checked and rechecked your marks countless times and you've calculated your marks and eagerly awaiting the results. Everyday a sense of anxiety grips you as you think about the result day, "Will I able to cross the line" or "Bad luck will shroud me once again"... By now, you have a premonition about your score and rank... In this blog, I will give you certain guidance as to what you can do for each set of ranks(assuming you are unreserved) .... :)

Rank 1-200: Your hard work has paid off... Congratulations sir. You have surely made your way to the top-notch PSUs like IOCL, ONGC, PGCIL,etc... Or if you want to be in the academics... The best institutes of the nation like IIT Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kharagpur are waiting for you. Not to forget the heaven of research scholars IISc Bangalore is well within your reach.

Rank 200-600: The PSUs might be tough now but still you can study any stream like structures, environment, soil, etc in any of the reputed IITs. Wait... But you will now ask, what is the use of an Mtech degree? I want a job.. Remember "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"... you can keep preparing for UPSC ESE, state PSC and other exams while studying in IIT. What I know most people do is get admission in IIT Delhi, take whatever subject is available with that rank and take coaching from some of the reputed coaching centres in Delhi like Made Easy and IES Master. This is a tried and tested formula for success. Hence, IIT Delhi seats are fiercely competed for. If your rank falls in this set, you will get IIT-D and you can carry out your preparation...

Rank 600-2500: The dilemma whether to drop a year or join IIT for masters grips you. IIT-D is full now and there are very slim chances of getting admission there. So you think of preparing all by yourself and appearing next year again. If you would ask me, I would say take admission in masters. See which IIT or NIT is in your hometown or nearby to it, take admission there. Why am I saying this? Because of fooding and lodging. You already have the required notes, handbooks, etc, just keep revising. Your institution takes care of the rest. Remember, your actual target is to secure a job Lets imagine the worst situation, you still fail to get a job after two years. But you are still left with one invaluable thing, your Mtech degree. If you ever happen to clear Polytechnics lecturer exam conducted by State PSCs, you will have a higher salary than your peers. Many of my friends still regret not having joined that Mtech course when they had the opportunity.

Rank>2500: Is everything over? Not until you say its over, its never over. Counselling in NITs go upto 6000-7000 rank via CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan.) The plan should be as discussed above and nothing otherwise. Keep following the CCMT website and even if you dont get admission, dont lose heart... keep trying because it will only get better from here.

Like i said in my previous post that I had secured 1416 rank in GATE 2015, people who get ranks similar to mine can take this as an example as to what can be your course of actions. There were no spot rounds in IIT in those days.. I got call from IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati for counselling. While my head said go to an IIT for Mtech but deep down inside I did not want to leave my comfort zone, i.e., the place from where I had done my BE, Jadavpur University(JU). JU has a very flexible curriculum for masters and is not so strict as IIT. That helped me in my preparation for UPSC. Although I was never able to crack UPSC, still the preparation helped me crack other exams. The Masters degree gave me an edge in interview over others.

Whatever be your rank, remember Patience is the key, keep giving exams... What did Samuel Beckett say " Ever tried, ever failed, no matter. Try again, fail again, FAIL BETTER". In my next post, I will be posting an interview with my friend who has fought his way to excel in GATE and other exams after 3 testing years.
