Took Civil Engineering as your Graduation Subject..? Congrats on your government job

So You have taken Civil Engineering as your subject for graduation and you are wondering about your future. We don't even know why we choose a subject after JEE. Lets face it, we just solved the most intricate of problems of physics, chemistry and maths and now we choose a subject around which our entire lives are supposed to rotate, without knowing much about the subject.

You enter your college and seniors be like "There is no placement in civil", "Tera life toh gaya (Your life is ruined)" and you are thinking why did I even choose civil engineering as a career. Worse, if you are in IIT or in a reputed government engineering college, you are feeling yourself behind after hearing the packages of your fellow peers from CSE, Mechanical, Electronics and Electrical, etc. The same happened with me when I used to study in Jadavpur University in civil engineering department. In 2015, when I passed out, Amazon had just recruited CSE students  ( I don't remember how many, because I was feeling dizzy after hearing their package) for a package of 26lpa from JU. But then comes the question "Why did I take Civil Engineering?".... I used to ask the same question to myself again and again. That was because like any other middle class family I wanted a government job.

So, did I get the govt job? The answer is yes. I did make it but after three years of slogging. But yes, I did make it. Right now, I work in a Govt of India PSU. In this blog, I will talk about the opportunities that civil engineering will give you.

Well, lets talk about the various exams that you can appear for after graduation:
  1. UPSC ESE( Engineering Services)- The mother of all engineering exams. This is the toughest of all the exams with around 200 seats overall in civil engineering. This exam is held for Group A gazetted officer post in services like Indian Railways, Military Engineering Services, CPWD, Border Roads, etc. If you crack this, you become a demi-god overnight. Conducted annually. I could not crack this. :(
  2. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)- The next best thing. Get a rank within 200 (General), and you book your seat to Govt of India PSUs like IOCL, ONGC, HPCL, WBSEDCL, only to name a few.. But hey, what happens if I don't get a rank within 200.  Imagine you don't have the preparation to crack UPSC (most people don't). You need some more time to prepare. You have two options : Drop or Masters. I would say go for Masters. From masters, you are not only getting a M.Tech degree but you are also buying yourself time to prepare for UPSC. For that you need to appear for GATE. Try and get a rank within 3000. My rank was 1416 in GATE 2015 and 1746 in GATE 2017. I still pursued my masters and continued my preparation along with it.
  3. Staff Selection Commission Junior Engineer (SSC JE) - The little brother of ESE. While ESE is conducted by UPSC, Junior Engineer exam is conducted by SSC. This exam is for the Group B non gazetted posts in all the departments for whom Gazetted posts are filled up by UPSC, except for the railways. Around 800 seats are available for civil engineering overall. Conducted annually.
  4. State PSC- Like UPSC for Govt of India, State PSCs of respective states conduct exams for the recruitment of Assistant Engineers, Junior Engineers, Assistant Professors( MTech is mandatory here), lecturers of polytechnics... Maybe another 1000 seats... But it is not conducted annually.
  5. PSUs- Apart from GATE, PSUs like AAI (Airports Authority of India), Coal India, etc. also conduct their respective exams. Keep your eyes peeled at newspaper recruitment ads. Some PSUs like NHAI also take freshers for consolidated pay of Rs. 60000-70000 per month based on GATE score on temporary basis for two to three years, but you will become permanent anyways. Many of my seniors still work here in this fashion.
Yes, Opportunities are there and you need to make the most out of it. but the most important ingredient is hard work and the "never give up" attitude. It will take time but in the end if you keep faith in yourself and keep slogging you will get the coveted "sarkari naukri".

P.S: I got a job through the 5th way.
